Mars Hill

Recently, I heard our pastor give a sermon on a famous visit to Athens made by the Apostle Paul in the first century. A passage in Acts 17 is one of the rare surviving records of what kinds of things the great Apostle to the Gentiles actually said in order to win them over to Christ.

The pastor pointed out that Paul went out of his way to find common ground with the polytheistic Athenians by making the altar to the “unknown god” the starting point of his sermon in the Aereopagus. The environment of the unfettered idol worship of the day grieved Paul’s spirit. However, instead of focusing on the things where he disagreed with a pagan lifestyle, Paul focused on the one thing that he could find that served as an interim Old Testament for this people group. . .

Find out how we use many of the same principles as Paul in Web outreach to university students here .
